Why Buy an Organic Mattress
From materials to general options, many brands and retailers carry organic mattresses today.
With so many mattress brands and types of mattresses on the market, it can be challenging to understand how they differ and what is right for you. When evaluating organic mattresses versus non-organic, it comes down to a few distinct differences, especially in terms of composition of materials.

Textiles and Other Materials
Organic mattresses typically contain natural materials and textiles that are some combination of organic cotton, latex, and wool. Wool is naturally anti-dust mite, which makes it a great material to use in a mattress. Some brands may also contain either PLA or Kapok that are made from plants. You can read more about the difference between PLA and Kapok in this article by Naturepedic.
Most notably, organic mattresses should not contain synthetic fire/flame retardants or other materials that may cause off-gassing of chemicals.

Size, Firmness, and Other Options
Typically, traditional mattress sizes and levels of firmness are available in an organic mattress. Some brands, such as Naturepedic, even have customizable options for each side of the bed that can be swapped out at any time.

Longevity
A few mattress retailers, such as Mancini's Sleepworld, Naturepedic, and Avocado, indicate organic mattresses last longer, but I cannot verify the accuracy. You will have to read their articles to judge for yourself.
Keep in mind, a warranty is not the actual lifetime of the product. Who knows, if you take care of your mattress, it could last years beyond its warranty.
Mattress brands differ in the length and type of warranty, so you have to check each one for consideration. However, I know at least one of the organic mattress brands we purchased from has a 25-year limited warranty on their mattresses.

Our Mattress Journey
The year was 2017, and we had recently moved. I was looking to replace our older mattress for both better sleep as well as sustainability. Organic mattresses were not as mainstream then as they have become today, so research took a little while.
We visited a few local showrooms and finally selected an organic latex mattress. We had that mattress for over seven years, until we realized each of us needed a different firmness.
I set about researching organic mattresses again, which seemed like night and day compared to years prior. There were many more options available, and some major retailers were carrying organic mattresses, such as Avocado, Birch, and others. Even Costco began carrying a selection of Avocado mattresses.

We visited a few showrooms, comparing mattress brands and options. When we visited the local Naturepedic store, we knew it was the one for us.
Naturepedic Mattress Review: EOS Cal King
We chose the Naturepedic EOS mattress (California King) after considerable research and trying it out in store.

The Naturepedic mattress is made in the USA with 100% GOTS certified organic cotton, organic wool, latex, and another fiber called PLA I mentioned earlier. The coils are individually wrapped and the mattress cover has nice brass zippers to close it up.

What we loved most about the EOS mattress is the ability to customize each side of the bed. With the EOS, there is a top and bottom layer, both of which can be swapped out even years after purchasing.

It is free to swap out the layers as many times as you need to during the first 100-night trial, but after that you have to purchase new layers.
During the trial, we swapped out a couple layers until we found the perfect combination that suited each of us.

It has been nearly a year since we purchased our Naturepedic mattress and we still love it. We like that if at any time in the future we need a different firmness level we can simply change out a layer instead of buying a new mattress. Moreover, they provide a 25-year limited warranty on their mattresses.
Before the mattress arrived, we changed out our dark wood bed frame for this upholstered bed frame in a linen shade (Classic Talc Linen) that gives our bedroom a much softer, cozy feeling. Are Organic Mattresses Worth it
To answer this question for yourself, you have to know what you value and be realistic with your budget. To us, an organic mattress is worth it for all the reasons I explained, but that may not be the case for everyone.

Generally speaking, organic mattresses typically cost more upfront, however it may come out to be the same over time if it truly lasts longer than a non-organic mattress. There are too many factors to know how long any given mattress will last for sure.
In terms of what you value, answer these questions:
- Do you prefer natural materials over synthetic?
- How long do you think you will have the mattress?
- Will you move the bed frequently? Organic mattresses tend to weigh more than non-organic, so you may need a couple people to help you move it.
- Is sustainability a concern to you?
When it comes to a mattress, everyone has different needs. In the end, choose the best one that works for you.
