Filled with heart-healthy fat, olive oil is the great equalizer. People from all over the world enjoy olive oil drizzled over salad, mixed into baked goods and used as a light cooking oil. We use olive oil every day at our house.
You will love this recipe because it’s
- Easy to make in about 3 minutes
- No cooking of any kind required
- Tastes comforting but light at the same time
More than just a dipping sauce, drizzle a little of this as a topping on a heaping bowl of Buttered Noodles!
Ingredients
Calling for only three ingredients, you can easily make this recipe in about 3 minutes. You will need to use a shallow dish, because otherwise the olive oil will create a pool. The last thing you want is a bunch of olive oil with none of the flavorful seasonings.
Tip:
Unless you have a very large shallow dish, I recommend making this recipe in small batches.
- Olive oil, 2 tablespoons - Warm, comforting olive oil is the main ingredient here. Use a good extra virgin olive oil that is better for drizzling than cooking. One of my favorite olive oils is La Tourangelle Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, single-sourced from Andalucía, Spain. We use it for cooking as well as drizzling. Double or triple this recipe if you’re making this for a crowd and you have a very large, shallow dish. I used a small (4.75 inch) beautiful white porcelain creme brulee baker by one of my favorite French dinnerware brands, Pillivuyt.
- Italian seasoning mix, ¼ teaspoon - You can make your own Italian seasoning mix, but I prefer to buy the pre-mixed variety in the spice section at the grocery store. I find that it’s well balanced in all its savory goodness.
- Salt, dash - A dash of salt goes a very long way in this recipe. Given how very few ingredients there are, salt brings out other flavors and completes this recipe perfectly.
- Black pepper (optional) - Some people add black pepper to their olive oil dipping sauce. You can add pepper to taste if you want.
Variations and Substitutions
- Make it spicy by adding red pepper flakes
- Drizzle in a little balsamic vinegar to give it another flavor
- Add finely minced garlic for a pungent bite
Directions
If you’re making this for a crowd, and you have a very large, shallow dish, you can easily double or triple this recipe. Otherwise, follow these three steps.
- Pour 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a shallow dish.
- In a separate dish, add ¼ teaspoon Italian seasoning and a dash of salt. Mix well to fully combine.
- Add the Italian seasoning salt mixture to the olive oil dish and mix well to fully combine.
- Serve with bread pulled apart into little chunks.
Serving Suggestions
Whether you’re craving bread dipping oil as a snack or serving it up to your guests on game day, there is no wrong way to eat olive oil dipping sauce!
- Appetizer - Your guests will love homemade olive oil dipping sauce served with warm sourdough bread that has been torn into chunks. Tearing bread into small chunks makes it easier for your guests to dunk the bread into a shallow dish filled with this sauce.
- Snack - Break out the bread and whip up this sauce in about 3 minutes for a snack!
- Dressing/Topping - Use this sauce as a dressing over salads, mixed into croutons baked in the oven and topping a bowl of hearty buttered noodles.
